For instance, Proverbs 9:17 states, “Stolen water is sweet; food eaten in secret is delicious!” To understand this parable is to realize the meaning behind the figure of speech: it refers to the attractiveness of the forbidden. Some translations, such as the King James Version (KJV), translate the term “riddles” as “dark sayings.”
